Kanoo is a California-based EV maker. But, unlike just about everyone else, Kanoo sees "modular" as the way to go. That is, the vehicle is easy to customize.

Sandy Munro goes to the factory and is impressed. So was I watching what Kanoo is doing. They have something different and I am confident there will be demand.

Check out what is happening at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3Sj2jJmug8

Assorted Factoids on Various Cars

A lot of interesting things have been happening with regard to EVs. Here are some factoids:

Maserati enters the EV space with the Gran Turismo Folgore EV. Three motors. Lots of power. If you want to own something close to a Tesla Model 3 for 5 times the price.

Honda has announced its first electric SUV for 2024. As General Motors will build it, it sounds like a Chevy Blazer with different bumpers.

Toyoda, President of Toyota motors continues to claim people don't want EVs.

People continue to like the Hyundai Ionic 5 but availability continues to drop.

BYD has, so far, decided to only sell the Dolphin in China. (Too bad as I would buy one.)

On the high quality but really small circuit, the Microlino is pretty interesting. Very small, front open 2-seater. You can see a review by The Fully Charged Show. Note that the reviewer is 6' 5" tall and he fits. On their web site they say it has "space for two adults and three beer crates". I like their attitude. Check them out at https://microlino-car.com/en/microlino

There is more happening but this will give you the flavor of things.

India-based TATA motors just introduced the Tiago.ev. It is a small EV with prices starting at about $10,000. While there are no details available yet it is a 4-door sedan. The Electric Viking offers the basics.

The big question is whether it will be available outside of India.

SAIC's Feifan R7 Electric SUV

There have been lots of new cars entering the "more affordable" market. My feeling is this is the beginning of reasonably-priced EVs. One of the reasons I feel this way is that Tesla prices are dropping so I think they see serious competition on the way.

The Feifan R7 is the best example I have seen so far. The Electric Viking reviews it and his review is worth a watch. The entry level model is for sale in China for less than $30,000 and includes a decent-sized battery pack and lots of state-of-the-art technology. Even if this is not the right car for you, it's price and features is going to force other players such as BYD to both keep prices down and add technology.

Hertz Just Ordered 175,000 EVs

Hertz just ordered 175,000 electric vehicles. Sounds great. But, they ordered them from GM. GM produced 7000 EVs last quarter. Can they really ramp up production any time soon?

Hertz said they would buy those cars over the next five years. Deliveries will start in early 2023 with the Bolt EV and EUV.

If this happens, it's a good thing. Assuming that EVs really are nicer to drive, people renting an EV will get more people exposed to the EV experience.

The new version of this car will get a 300 km charge from a 600 kw fast charger in five minutes. Overall range is 1000 km. And it's not a small car.

Geely, a Chinese company, also owns Volvo. They are taking EVs seriously. I don't see this vehicle as an exception but more like the future.

The Electric Viking has a good video covering this car.

Will 2024 be the year of the EV?

While EV production has increased rapidly in the last year with Tesla and BYD leading the way, it is starting to look like the 2024 model year may bring legacy auto into the market. Here are some examples:

GM has announced the Equinox will enter the EV market with seven models starting at around $30,000. They are based on the GM Ultium platform.

Toyota has announced that an electric HiAce van will enter the market built on the Toyota/Subaru platform. This is a big deal as BYD builds the electric Corolla for Toyota.

Jeep has announced three models -- Avenger, Recon & Wagoneer.

While Ford is already selling the F-150 lightning pickup, we should see the Chevy Silverado electric pickup and the Tesla Cybertruck enter the market soon.

The mainstream media seems to think legacy auto (and, in particular, GM) is going to take over the EV market. I seriously doubt that but with legacy auto finally starting to enter the market it should help to offer more options and keep the price down.

Interesting choice for them but they keep claiming people don't want electric cars so I guess this was the easiest way to test the market.

The problem comes when BYD expands all over the world (which it is currently doing). Then why would you want to buy a BYD that says Toyota on it?
